Although benzene has been banned in the United States for over 20 years, millions of workers are exposed to significant
amounts of benzene in the work place every year. Most workers come into contact with benzene by breathing it into their
lungs or absorbing it through their skin when working with solvents. Even small amounts of exposure to benzene can
cause acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and
myelodysplastic syndrome.
The industries in which workers are exposed to the highest
levels of benzene include the rubber industry, oil refineries, chemical plants,
and gasoline related industries. Workers employed in these industries are at the
greatest risk of developing the life threatening diseases associated with
benzene exposure.
